Teacher's Guide: Hungry Alligator

Hungry Alligator is a greater-than / less-than game for Grades K–1. The alligator always eats the bigger number — students tap or swipe to feed it, earning coins to spend on hats, glasses, costumes, and color schemes. The cosmetic system motivates repeated play while the math stays front and center.

What Students Practice

  • Comparing two numbers to identify which is greater or lesser
  • Understanding the meaning of > and < symbols in context
  • Number sense and magnitude — which number is "more"
  • Quick number recognition under mild time pressure

Standards Alignment

  • CCSS.MATH.1.NBT.B.3 — Compare two two-digit numbers based on tens and ones
  • CCSS.MATH.K.CC.C.6 — Identify whether one group is more, less, or equal to another
  • CCSS.MATH.K.CC.C.7 — Compare two numbers between 1 and 10

Classroom Tips

  • Use before formally introducing > and < symbols to build the conceptual foundation first
  • 10 questions per round creates a natural stopping point for center rotations
  • Coin totals save in the browser — students use the same device each time to keep cosmetics
  • Follow-up: after playing, have students write > or < between two numbers you call out on a whiteboard
  • Works on tablets and phones for at-home practice
How long is one session?

Each round is 10 questions and typically takes 3–5 minutes. Students can stop after any round, making it ideal for 5-minute warm-ups or math center rotations.

What number range does the game use?

The game compares two-digit numbers up to 99, matching Grade 1 expectations. Kindergarteners working on single-digit comparison will still find it very accessible.

Does it save student progress?

Coin totals and cosmetic purchases are saved in the browser's local storage. No account is needed, but students should use the same browser and device each time to keep their progress.
